type 1 diabetes favorites, Amazon edition
It’s absolutely nutty to me but somehow I hit TEN YEARS of living with type one diabetes this month! I was diagnosed right after I had Lilly, our first daughter. We had thought I had gestational diabetes (after a traumatizing GDM test - I’ll come back to that another day, lol) when I was 31 weeks pregnant with her (after drinking copious amounts of sparkling grape juice that entire pregnancy… whoops).
After I delivered her, I was assured my blood sugar would go back to normal. I had the typical 6 week postpartum checkup and was given a call back shortly that my blood sugar was not anywhere near “normal.” More blood tests and agonizing days later, I got the call in a Target parking lot that I had “adult onset type 1 diabetes”… and the rest is history.
There are a few things I have to have on me or nearby me to live my best life with diabetes. I’m so grateful to have the medical advancements that allow my CGM (continuous glucose monitor) and insulin pump to integrate together to constantly anticipate my insulin needs and deal with my highs and lows before they become problematic.
Still, I have to pack emergency snacks wherever I go (workout classes, errand running, beach days, vacation, etc). I have to make sure my phone is charged and on me because my CGM readings go straight to my phone and an app controls my insulin pump.
Here are those things (and a few more!) that make my life so much easier living with T1D!
